Taking inspiration from natural ecosystems and drawing on ideas from permaculture design, this informal gathering is a conversation about communities – the diverse skills, experiences and qualities we each bring and how this can enable a healthy, sustainable culture. Join us with Seema Patel and Mel Harvey for a pot luck feast to explore how our communities in Torbay are made up - and what we need to cultivate to enable our ‘garden’ to thrive.

The roots of this conversation are based in ecology and how we can learn from nature’s communities to build and support our own. Discuss and explore how each of us are of value in our human ecosystem. Every one of us has strengths and skills to offer and if we link together, we can create beneficial interactions across the community.

Over a communal meal, we will exchange ideas about how communities and neighbourhoods interact - sharing thoughts on how to nourish them. Contribute to the meal by bringing some food to share.

All welcome, but most suitable for those aged 16+.

Seema Patel works with communities in a range of contexts and has been teaching permaculture design for a number of years. She is experienced in facilitating arts and environmental education and is particularly interested in experiential learning. She has worked with numerous groups in urban areas to set up food growing spaces and has worked on community initiatives including a food waste kitchen, a forest garden and a local Transition Town.

Seema is joined by Melissa Harvey for this conversation. Mel works with adults to develop skills in growing food for themselves, their schools and their communities, and in the process create bountiful spaces for themselves, their communities and nature. She takes inspiration from natural patterns and ecology to learn how to live more fully and lightly in the world.
